The program takes 3 to 4 months to complete. The amount of time is depended upon your goals and prior work done with your dog. You can find many dogs trained at Prairie Wind Kennels at hunting lodges throughout South Dakota and the United States. The program starts with basic obedience where sit, heel, and here are taught. We introduce your dog to birds and guns. This part of the program takes about 1 month. We then force break and collar condition the dog. At the end of this phase your dog will deliver bird to hand come when called and learn various hunting situations, depending upon your goals. We shoot live birds on a daily basis for your dog. The third month of training we will begin to steady your dog. He will then sit quietly at your side and retrieve only when sent. We also incorporate decoys, duck blinds into our training regiment. We tailor our gun dog program to cross train for waterfowl and upland.
